The national student intake to university in the UK is increasing. 311,000 students applied for higher education places starting in autumn. This is 10% more than the previous record set in 2021 despite COVID-19 and a decline in the overall population.

Southampton is home to exceptional medical facilities and gives hands on teaching in one the UK’s leading teaching hospitals. Southampton General Hospital is the NHS Foundation Trust’s largest location, with a great number of specialist services based here, ranging from neurosciences and oncology to pathology and cardiology.

The University of Southampton (a Russell Group University) has world leading medical research groups such as cancer research, global health, immunology and inflammation research, infectious diseases and more.

Covid has impacted the NHS greatly so much so the government is calling for an increase in nurses, doctors and graduates of medicine. The government is proposing an increase of 5,000 students a year. This totals 14,500 graduates a year with future expansion on this number expected. 28,690 students applied for medicine in 2021 which is an increase of 21% from the previous year which is a phenomenal increase.
